110V plug-and-play vs 220V hot tubs
The short answer
A 110V plug-and-play spa uses a standard outlet but heats slowly, around 1 to 2 degrees per hour, and usually can't run its heater while the jets are on high. A 220V spa needs an electrician but heats 3 to 4 times faster, runs full jets and heat together, and costs less per soak. For a full-size spa you plan to use year-round, 220V is the better buy.
How the two systems differ
A 110V plug-and-play spa draws what a standard household outlet can supply, which caps its heater at roughly 1 kW. A 220-240V spa runs a 4 to 5.5 kW heater on a dedicated circuit. Same water, same shell, wildly different horsepower behind the temperature.
That difference shows up two ways: how long you wait after a refill, and what happens when the jets kick on. Many 110V spas must shut the heater off while the jets run on high, so a long evening soak slowly cools. A 220V spa holds its temperature no matter what the pumps are doing.
What it means in practice
After a drain and refill, a 1 kW heater raising water 1 to 2 degrees per hour can take the better part of a day to reach 102 degrees. A 5.5 kW heater like the US Balboa units in our lineup does the same job in a fraction of the time.
Efficiency follows the same logic. Heating slowly through a small element while the spa sheds heat the whole time wastes energy. The faster 220V heat-up plus better recovery generally costs less per soak, even before Florida's mild winters tilt the math further in your favor.
The one real advantage of 110V
Plug-and-play spas exist for situations where running a new circuit is impossible: some rentals, some condos, and temporary placements. Plug it into a GFCI outlet and you're soaking the same day it's delivered.
If that describes your situation, a 110V spa beats no spa. Just go in with clear eyes about heat-up times and jet-versus-heater tradeoffs, and favor a heavily insulated model, because insulation is doing extra work when the heater is small.

How much does the 220V electrical installation cost?

Can a 110V spa be converted to 220V later?
Many convertible models can be rewired by an electrician, but the heater is often still the smaller element, so you don't gain the full benefit of a true 220V spa. If you can wire once, buy the 220V spa first.
Is 220V safe around water?
Yes, when installed to code. The dedicated circuit is GFCI-protected with a disconnect near the spa, exactly the same protection standard used for pools. That's why licensed installation and a permit matter.
